Redbridge Trades Union Council

OPEN MEETING

(to kick-off 12-18 Feb Heart Unions Week)

‘What future for trade unions?’

Guest Speaker: Elly Baker (NEU National Organiser)

7.30 - 9.00pm Friday 9 February 2018

St. John’s Church Centre, St. John’s Road, Seven Kings, IG2 7BB

All welcome – plenty of time for discussion!

Elly Baker is National Organiser at the National Education Union. She has been a union activist and then Organiser for nearly 20 years, organising workers across diverse sectors such as transport, logistics, social care and the arts. She was a senior union negotiator on the railway for many years and has organised workers against hostile employers such as Amazon and Uber. She has been able to see the union movement at its most militant and strong, and also to see up close where it is desperately needed - within the most exploited and precarious workers.

This will be an excellent introduction for activists who are unfamiliar with or unsure about how trades unions function and the part they can play in building a better society.

Heart Unions Week, 12-18 February 2018

This year we are focusing on the TUC’s Great Jobs Campaign (https://www.tuc.org.uk/campaigns/great-jobs-agenda) and in particular the case for workers having an independent voice at work, achieved through recognising trade unions. We are working with the BFAWU to specifically support their McDonalds campaign, calling upon McDonalds to support recognition of the Bakers Union, fair pay for food workers and decent contracts for staff.

King George A&E closure plan defeated

This excellent video by Platform Films shows how local activists and trade unionists pushed forward the campaign against plans to close Accident and Emergency services at King George hospital, Ilford, and a united stance by borough leaders in Redbridge, Havering, Barking and Dagenham and Waltham Forest led to the withdrawal of the plan.
